Wishing my working life away!

I don’t mind my job (high praise indeed!) but from time to time I need a take a break without actually leaving my desk! These are just some of the sites that help me make it through the day.

I haven’t included any of the ‘usual suspects’ e.g youtube, Wikipedia,eBay, ASOS or any of the any social networking or job searching sites. All of these sites are ‘safe’ but might be blocked by your work IT department.

AV club

English: Sex advice columnist, journalist, and...

Dan Savage – AV Club  Image via Wikipedia

A pop culture website that includes film reviews, episode by episode TV reviews (TV club), interviews, pop culture lists and so much more!! This site also has regular relationship advice from Dan Savage advice column (he’s also in my favourite podcasts post).  So far this week I’ve read:

I’ve also ‘joined the ‘tv club’ and love nothing more than watching episodes of True Blood, The Walking Dead, American Dad! (the list could go on) and then reading the episode review.

Welcome back!

I welcome back my favourite shoes

Believe me I have numerous pairs of shoes. I’ve never actually counted just how many so let’s just settle on ‘numerous’.

Cobblers!

Even though I have a wide choice of footwear, for some reason I tend to settle on a pair of shoes (or boots) and then wear them exclusively for like a month or two. Anyway a few months ago the strap on my favourite Clark originals mary-janes began to fray so I put them aside for a while.

The shoes

They’re suede wedges with an ankle strap and are super comfortable! Wearing them to work used to cheer me up. So I wasn’t ready to say good-bye just yet.

I looked around for a cobbler and found one on my local high street, prevention is better than a cure, right?

Welcome back my old friend

I just ♥ you!

I’ve just picked my shoes up!

V&A:Theatre & Performance collections

The Victoria and Albert  (V&A) museum is VAST. There is no way I could see every collection in a single visit, so I’ll be looking at individual collections.

Lion King costumes. Designers: Julie Taylor and Michael Currey

What you’ll find

As a Londoner I have visited the V&A numerous times and as student even attended a sculpture workshop.  Today I decided to visit Theatre and performance collections.

The collection has vox pox from designers, actors, director alongside costumes, set models, marionettes, puppets, posters and theatre memorabilia. The collections are in a fairly dark room which I think is to preserve the collection. I spent about an hour and ½ here and it’s not that large a room. I did find myself going back to see things again, intently reading the exhibition cards. I thoroughly enjoyed myself!

How sustainable is the modern zombie lifestyle?

I contemplate the inevitable outcome of a zombie invasion

Soccer Mom Zombie

These ramblings are about ‘modern’ zombies and not the zombies associated with voodoo.

Horror genres have well established rules which create a logical universe allowing the narrative to move forward and provide the viewer with a grounding that offers some element of stability. Vampires only come out at night, werewolves only transform when there’s a full moon.We know how the monsters operate!

Humans will always overcome the monsters and reestablish existing or create new communities. To me zombies defy this.  They are generally shown as unbeatable and their primary directive of simply eating human flesh just seems illogical and self defeating.

My favourite podcasts for commuting

These podcasts make my commute to work bearable!

The discovery

The 1st time I connected my 16GB MP3 player to itunes© I discovered podcasts. And best of all  - they were free!!

Initially I subscribed to a few podcasts and soon realised my measly 16GB player was way too small – I upgraded to 160GB and haven’t looked back since.

Podcasts picks

I subscribe to 25 podcasts, some of which are updated weekly. I tend to listen to the weekly podcasts during my daily commute and other podcasts either during the weekend or on the rare occasions I do some housework.

These are my five favourite commuting podcasts in alphabetical order. They can all be found on itunes© Continue reading
